Hi,

I'm a Italian graduate student on a F1 visa for 3 years. I received a W2 for 26.000 USD and a 1099-S for 3.000 USD.

I'm using CINTAX, an online software specifically designed for aliens, to prepare the federal tax return. I know that in some cases it's possible to claim for a standard deduction rather that in itemized deduction, but this software doesn't seem to account for it. The only deduction it accounts for is called "Non-Service Scholarship/Fellowship Expenses" and I don't know if it's the same thing. In fact if I don't claim any expense the software doesn't account for deduction.

I would like to know if I'm entitled to the standard deduction, if so in which amount and in which line of the 1040ez should it appear.

Thank you and best regards,

Matteo.

Matteo:

Form 1040EZ is the WRONG tax form; you need to file Form 1040NR.

Form 1099-S is normally issued on the sale of a capital asset. What did you sell?

David,

Sorry, I'm wrote it all wrong!

The software CINTAX prepares the 1040NR-EZ.

I received 3000 USD on a 1042-S.

I'm sorry, I know you have a million question to answer and little time.

Thank you,

Matteo

Insert the $3,000 as WAGES on Form 1040NR-EZ.

If that is your ONLY income, your $3,300 personal exemption will completely offset the income and you will get ALL of your withheld income taxes back as a refund.
