Type 1 can be transmitted by any kind of contact. Type 1 is also increasingly showing up in the genital area (rather than all genital hsv being type 2), and is transmitted by having any kind of sex.
If you get it, you get it right away, but many if not most people have no symptoms, so 'when does it show up' isn't really relevant. You can get sores in a few days, a few weeks, or never.
Usually it is diagnosed by either just looking at the typical sores, or taking a small sample and doing a microscopic analysis. It is possible to do a blood test too.
Type 1, if not around the genital area, is usually around the mouth, and is diagnosed by visual inspection, and treated with an anti-viral or any number of OTC products. Cold sores inside the mouth are the same. I have put an aspirin against a cold sore in my mouth with good results, but I don't know if it was the cure or if it went away on it's own.

'Any kind of contact' means any touching, not just saliva, blood, sexual fluids.
Where on his body?
Why the big deal about type 1?

So you don't know where on his body...

Please read what I wrote again - type 1 is something just about all of us get, a typical cold sore. UNLESS it's in the genital area.
If you saw a test result without any other information, you are getting all worked up for possibly nothing.

And you have no idea why he had bloodwork, I take it.
I can't seem to impress on you that the details matter.

Then get tested again - IF it matters to you. Which it wouldn't to me.
You keep revealing tiny details that should have all been in the first paragraph!
