I have a whirlpool washing machine. When the machine reaches the rinse cycle, it will not fill with cold water. I can hear the machine humming. The hot water will fill but not the cold. Can you help me

The cold water is probably not working during the main fill either. Take the hoses loose from the back of the machine and look at the screens. Remove them with a pair of hemostats or needle-nose pliers, but be careful not to deform the screen. Clean it well and water should now flow. The only part that would cause it to fill on one cycle but not others is the timer. It's a very rare problem, though.
