:Hello!

I have to fill my tax for 2006, and I want to do it by myself. But how to get a maximum
Refund?

I'm french, I went to america for 1 year, as a trainee with a J1 visa.I received wages during this period.

After several searches, I found out that I have to fill and send:
-1040NR EZ form as a non resident
-8843 form(showing that I'm considered as a non resident because of my J1 visa)
-w2 form

On my W2 form, I have these amonts:
-wages and tips:13560
-fed tax:1100
-state tax:500

When I try to fill my 1040 NREZ form,It appears that I can only receive this amont:88$ out of my 1100 tax witheldfrom my salaries! (I subtract to my adjusted income my state taxe,L11, And a exempt deduction of 3300$, L13, After finding my tax in the table tax,I subtract this amont with my tax already paid)

Until I reach with my salaries an amont of 5000 $, no taxes were withheld from my paychecks, but after, I had to pay on each paycheck both federal and state taxes.

Is there any ways that I can receive a bigger refund?

Thanks for your answer!

Don't forget you also have to do taxes for the state you were living in. That might up the amount you get back.

Thank you for your answer intastudent, but I understood that as a J1 visa, I can have back almost all my taxes already paid, that's why even if I know that I can have a refund of my states taxes, I need more information for my federal taxes!

No, that is not true, especially if you are raining with a for-profit company.

You are liable for INCOME taxes (state and federal), but are exempt from Social Security and Medicare taxes.
