Even though I am a Christan and believe in God I have a very great fear of going to hell when I die. The time I feel the most scared is actually the time when it's time to go to bed and the lights are out, then I get scared. I figure it's probably because during the day I enjoy doing my own stuff and forget about the fact of going to hell and at night since I'm not doing anything but lay there the only thing that comes to mind is going to hell when I die. Each night I keep saying to myself and thinking "I believe in God" "I believe in God" "Jesus is real" and stuff like that. I actually DO believe in God but I still have this kind of fear. And sometimes during the night, a sudden thought comes through my mind saying "god is not real" and then I get really scared. Even though it's just a thought that comes through my mind and I know it's not true I still get very scared. I also realized that I only get one chance to live meaning I get one chance to believe in God to go to heaven.

I have talked to my mom about this problem and fear that I have but my mom just tells me that people who believe in God goes to heaven and if you don't you'll go to hell. I DO believe in God but its just those thoughts that cross my mind saying "jesus isn't real" and I know jesus IS real so I just get scared. Any suggestions?

Frederick Buechner once said, "Doubts are the ants in the pants of faith." In other words, if you didn't believe, you wouldn't have those doubts.

The fact that you are Christian and believe in God is the reason you have these fears. Your belief means that you also believe in heaven and hell as a reward and punishment punishment respectively.

But that is the key. Just believing is not quite enough. If you live your life according to Christian ethic. If you are a good person, then heaven will be your reward.

Do you have any idea why you feel this way?

Are you guilty about something and the guilt is driving these doubts?

As a Christian our instructions are:

"Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."

And God has made a promise to us:

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."

God showed us he is over everything including death. I like to think of it this way. For Christians our time here on earth is the only hell we will no. For people who don't believe, their time here on earth is the only heaven they will know.

Remember God doesn't promise us 94 years of life on earth. That is completely out of our control. He does promise us eternal life. Maybe a devotional book you read parts of at night and then say a little prayer to God thanking him for his blessings and asking him to forgive your sins would help. Also share your fears with him. He does understand all.

The issue is what belief do you have in God, the devil knows God exists, the devil knows the bible better than you and I. and will use it against us to temp us, or to give us doubt.

Everyone has doubts, Peter would not admit knowing Christ at one point. After his death, his followers were hiding in fear that the Romans would come for them.

Have you accepted Christ as your Savior, do you believe he has forgiven you.

This mightn't have anything to do with your faith. Your getting recurring, involuntary, distressing thoughts at night-time - they could be about anything but they'll always be about what you fear most. I had this problem throughout my childhood - over the years it changed to a new fear - hell - death - paralysis - going blind - choking - ghosts etc. I grew out of it eventually.

You can see a doctor or therapist, it is likely OCD or anxiety disorder.

The thoughts, the fear you are having is most likely an evil spirit sent to torment you. Fear is of the devil and his only weapon against a Christian. Remember God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of love and of power and a sound mind. I suggest talking to the devil... yes, tell him he is the one going to hell and he has no hope and then laugh at him. Tell him you know Jesus as your personal Saviour and that you are going to heaven and he cannot stop you. Tell him to "shut up, get out and stay out!" The only power he has is what you give to him. Don't allow him to continue to torment you with fear.

Reading the Bible at night, and praying is also a good way to strengthen your faith and bring you 'peace in believing' Jesus said 'My peace I leave with you.. " the very peace that was in Jesus when He was on earth is still here and available to you. The very same peace is yours.

365 time in the Bible is the phrase, 'fear not' and often followed by 'Only Believe'. You know and believe Jesus is Lord, the Lord of your life. Do not let the devil steal your joy and peace.

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. (Jhn 14.27)

You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you. (Isa. 26:3)
