Andy is a neutered 3 yr old chi/rat terrier. Since I let him in from outside about an hour ago, he is desperately chewing and licking at his penis. The whole tender part is hanging out as he is doing this. When he gets up to move it goes back in but he only takes a few steps then drops down and returns to chewing and licking almost ferociously. I have never seen this before and have no idea what to do to help.

Put in a call, waiting for him to call me back. He is in surgery. I've never seen this before, just thought someone may have some insight.

I've seen it, but not to that extent.

Curious what the professionals on here have to say.

Please come back with what the Vet says.

Haven't heard back yet, but whatever it was seems to be over. I am wondering if it may have been a flea. He also has allergies and his back end stays red for most of the spring and summer. I rub aloe on him and give him benadryl. So that may be a factor as well. I will post what the vet says.

Vet says my guess was right, it may have just been a flea he was after. Said to keep an eye on him and if the dog starts up again or his penis area looks red or inflamed (which it doesn't), bring him on in and he will check it out. He said he didn't think his skin allergies were the cause but wouldn't rule anything out without looking at it.

Wow - there is another thread about Benadryl for dogs, interesting enough.

Thanks for coming back.

Good luck!

Could be a bee sting or other insect bite.

Yes that is what I think as well. He seems fine now.
