There is no such thing as squatters rights. But anyone who has been living with you for 4 years is a resident in the home. That gives them the same rights as any tenant. Therefore they have to be evicted according to the legal processes in NJ.
The cops will not get involved since this is a civil matter. Nor can you change the locks until after they have vacated (voluntarily or involuntarily.
This site has guidelines for evictions:

You have to give a written notice of 3 to 30 days depending on your state law. I think New Jersey was 3 days, not sure now. https://www.rocketlawyer.com/secure/interview/new.aspx?id=1764&utm_source=104&utm_medium=cpc&try=1&v=3&utm_account=Rocket-Lawyer-Documents&utm_campaign=Beta-Professional-Search-Geo-Modified&utm_adgroup=%281764%29nj-eviction-notice%28professional%29&utm_term=+new%2520+jersey%2520+eviction%2520+notic e#q1 Then file with the court clerk. Its best to send everything certified.

A 3 day would only apply if there is a breach of the lease. Since I doubt if there is a lease, a 30 day notice would apply.
