Can a washing machine and a shower share a drain? The location of our rough in for a bathroom in the basement is crazy and we're trying to come up with ideas on how to lay it out. Putting the washer on one side of the wall and the shower on the other with the two sharing a drain... so far makes the most sense.

Is that allowed?

If not... can a shower and a sink share a drain?

Eventually all of the drains come together so you'd think this idea would work. Don't do it, the washer doesn't gravity drain, it pumps out under enough pressure that you will get back flow into the shower drain.

Any drain that has a motorized disharge is not allowed by code to enter within 10 feet downstream of another fixture and not allowed to discharge upstream of another fixture. The discharge is so rapid it has a tendency to pull the water out of the trap of the other fixture.

Doug, does that code apply to a dishwasher too? Hope not or tomorrow just got busier.

I failed an inspection because I had a disposer flushing by a toilet on a 4" cast iron branch. the inspecter showed me the code and then explained it. i changed my layout.
i am not saying it will not work. i am saying it has a probability of failure and is against code. i seriously doubt that disposer would have pulled a toilet dry on a 4" cast iron branch and riser.
