View Full Version : Numbness in top of foot?

A week ago today I was in my living room and fell (yes, yes - I know, I've told the kids to pick up their legos) and landed pretty hard on my left knee and somehow, the top of my right foot. I went to see my doctor, and he's scheduling me for an MRI to check for a torn meniscus. At the appointment (two days ago), I didn't have any numbness. I woke up yesterday morning, and my right foot felt like it was asleep. I shook it off, walked around, and thought it was fine. A few hours later I had to adjust a sandal strap, and as I did so, noticed that the top of my foot was completely numb. I poked around a bit, and sure enough - just the top of my foot, from my big toe back to my ankle (going an inch up my shin), and from halfway up my instep over to just over my fourth toe - completely numb. I could stick a needle in my foot, and I'm sure I wouldn't feel it. I've read about MS symptoms, diabetic issues, etc - none of them apply to me. I'm leaving in the morning for week long car trip with my husband to San Francisco. Is this something I should worry about? Will it be fine until I get back for the MRI? Do I need to have it looked at now? Any suggestions would be gratefully accepted.

You probably hurt a nerve. Foot and leg injuries can tale weeks. If you feel you can't wait or Its getting worse maybe you should go to the ER

It doesn't take an MRI to diagnose a miniscus (that is a disc in the foot). I hope you aren't paying for the MRI or the booking. In my area MRI useable is only booked for important diagnosis. A foot doctor could have diagnosed this.

Totally with you there... (?? ) :)
Top of foot is still just numb. (Who ever knew how annoying skin on part of your body going numb would be!) The odd thing is, there's numbness in my left hand now that comes and goes. And nothing really major - just one of those "oh, hey, my fingers tingle", kind of things. Then it goes away (but the foot numbness is always there). One probably has nothing to do with the other and is simply coincidence (but it DOES make one wonder). Anyway, my doc's office opens tomorrow morning at 8:30am. I'm just going to call the M.A. there and see what she thinks before I take off on my trip. I've had plenty if soft tissue injuries to know they can sometimes take quite a long time to heal - I've just never had numbness as part of the package.
If the MRI is positive, the P.A. I spoke with says I'll likely be scheduled for outpatient surgery (they'll just scope the knee and I'll be done). Blaaaaah. I'm aware I'm being a baby about it, but I HATE surgery! :P Thanks for the response - I'll keep you updated N0help4u!

A torn meniscus is NOT an injury to a disc in the foot. It is a common KNEE injury, and an MRI is a common diagnostic tool.
This sounds more like a nerve injury. I think a call to the MA is a good idea, but you should be fine for your trip.

Just an FYI for some of my colleagues.
