I am currently 35 weeks pregnant, and I have had a hard pregnancy with anemia and not being able to eat right. I have recently smoked weed to try to help me be able to eat. But I'm scared if I go to have my baby within the next week, cause 3 days ago they had to stop my labor and I'm already dialated to 2... I'm scared that they will test my baby and find weed and take him away... the last time I smoked was about 2 days ago, and it wasn't a lot. I live in Kentucky. And I just wanted to know, will they test him for no reason, cause I haven't giving them a reason to think I have smoked or anything.

If you were so worried about your baby being taken away, why would you take the risk?

Its going to be detectible in the child's blood long after its birth... And I hope they run tests.

And if they do catch it... CPS will get involved and they might take the child. Which I hope they do. As a mother.. your first responsibility was to do what's best for the child... and that means no smoking ANY substance.. no alcohol or any type of drug that is detrimental to the developing baby.

I researched, and I couldn't find anything that states that all infants are tested at birth. From what I have found, there has to be a suspicion (not proof) that the mother has been using drugs during her pregnancy.


Healthcare professionals must test newborns for prenatal drug exposure when there is suspicion of maternal drug abuse.

So, if they suspect that you've been using, then yes, they will test, and they will find out if you've been using drugs. You risk losing your child by doing this.

If you're having trouble eating, and you're having a difficult pregnancy, your doctor should have been informed so that he/she could help. Instead of going that route, you chose to use illegal drugs. Well, now you risk losing your child because of it. Your choice. Too bad baby doesn't have a choice which womb he's in. :(

There is a new initiative in the US called the Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome. Typically babies aren't tested unless mothers are tested and turn up positive. Some hospitals test all mothers. I can't speak for yours, but my hospital here in Tennessee tests all mothers.

When we test baby, we don't test baby's blood unless baby is born dead. We test their urine and meconium (first tarry black poops). The meconium will show all drugs used during the entire pregnancy.

You not only risk losing your child to CPS, but to stillbirth as well. I just had a patient who was 37 weeks and had a stillbirth last night. She tested positive for several drugs and had only seen a doctor twice during the pregnancy. Since this baby was born dead, we obviously couldn't test the urine or meconium. We had to test the blood. The blood was positive for the same drugs mom used. Mom is now being prosecuted for the death of her unborn child.

Anemia and lack of appetite are no reason to place your unborn child at risk. That is simply selfishness on your part.

When I was pregnant,I remember they took a lot of urine samples from me,cause they do a lot of tests to make sure you have nothing wrong with you or the baby.I imagine they can easily find that out so I would be careful from this point on.I hope this helped you.

Oh and please think of the baby before continuing to drugs.There is no reason that a baby should have to suffer for others descions.

Aside from whether your hospital will test or not, there is the topic of any drug (including of course tobacco and alcohol) taken during pregnancy.
The internet is full of conflicting information about smoking pot. Some of it harks back to studies on rats, and some of it is very probably anecdotal, coming from the fact that a pot smoking pregnant woman very likely leads a different lifestyle from non-pot smoking women in many ways. She may be more casual about her diet, pre-natal vitamins and other care, tobacco and alcohol, exercise, rest, and on and on. I'm not claiming to know.
