View Full Version : Urge to self-harm sometimes?

OK, so I self-harmed a few times last year. Only like 4 or 5, and I never cut. BUT I find that I still want to hurt myself. Why? I mean it's really only when I'm majorly frustrated or angry or something, but still, I REALLY don't want to do it again. I'm afraid I'm going to end up giving back in.

Find a positive behavior to do every time you feel this way. I had a client who pulled out her hair in one place at the back of her head. She decided when she wanted to do that negative behavior for whatever reason she would do something else positive with her hands. That took her to the computer, so she would type emails or post on various interactive sites that she enjoyed. She could have chosen many other things to do with her hands, but this worked for her and her hair grew back (because she had snuffed out the bad behavior).

Might that kind of thinking work for you?

I usually just try to distract myself, and sometimes I try to look up ways to avoid it, but looking at it triggers me even more. Might work. I never thought about doing something like that before. Thanks, I'll give it a try :)
