I have a black wire, white wire, and a red wire coming out of ceiling what is what

How about some more info. What were they hooked up to before? Have you tested them for voltage? Typically the black and red would be connected to separate wall switches for a light and a fan and the white is neutral BUT, is there a 3 way switch or just single pole that read On and Off? No bare wire for a ground?
