It's 116 deg outside at 3:00 PM... My thermostat is set at 79 deg and my Heat Pump

Has been running CONSTANTLY for one & One half hours ( Outside temp at this

Time is usually around 105 deg and the Unit will cycle off & on every 20 min.}

Is this considered normal operation ? Should I just let it run till it cools down?.

Or call a service guy ? ( Unit just had a successful Summer check up last month}

What should I do... if anything?

You answered your own question -it's 116 degrees. Ambient heat load is too much for AC. Does it cool down the unit at night?

Yes.after a couple of hours when the temp drops... but will this type of operation

Harm the unit ? Do I have any other options?

The condenser has to get rid of all the heat it is taking out of your house. It is having a hard time in 116 degrees. If it sits in direct sunlight it wouldn't hurt shade it if you can and not interfear with air flow. A lawn sprinkler spraying water on the coil would help if that is possible. Cost of water would probably be less than the cost of electricity.
