Never give a person more than you would want them to leave with

It means roughly... You only lavish gifts you can afford on some else knowing you might not get anything in return... or you do it because you enjoy it... not because you expect anything in return.

Because things could change and they would be out of your life literally in an instant.

At least that's my interpretation of it.
