My 3 week old son is strictly breast fed but in the last few days has started to throw up quit a lot every time he eats directly from the breast. But when I pump and feed him from a bottle he spits up a normal amount of milk. His doctor says it may be a reflux problem but wants to give him a medication that's main side affect is vomiting which makes absolutely no sense to me.

Are there any other mom's out there that have had the same problem that have any advice or tips for me?

Ask the doctor explain the purpose of the medication. There must be more to it.

Are you burping the baby properly after feeding? It's a misconception that breast fed babies don't need to be burped. They do. Watch what you are eating. Many foods make baby gassy and they can tend to spit up. You might want to check your diet and see if any of the foods you are eating are gas producing foods. Just because you don't become gassy doesn't mean baby won't.

Also, make sure to keep baby in an upright position for approximately 30 minutes after feeding.

Yes, it may be a reflux problem. What medication did the doctor suggest?

Many of these problems resolve after 6 months of age, and they tend to outgrow this within a year.

Since your baby is only 3 weeks old, I suggest that you remember that his tummy is smaller than the size of his fist. Thus, it is possible that you are such a good breast mom that you may be producing so much milk that his tummy is getting too full. When this happens, it's just like over-filling a glass with water. What doesn't fit in the tummy will come back up.

So, some things to remember...

1) Smaller more frequent feedings;
2) Burp... Burp... Burp;
3) Check your diet; and
4) Keep baby upright in a sitting position for a minimum of 30 minutes after the feeding is complete.
