I have been taking metoprolol for a week for svt and they said it would help control heart rate I have been to the er since for heart pounding and they said since it slows heart rate that it make heart beat harder. As for that I understand but I have noticed that like an hour before I am supposed to take it at night it feels like my blood pressure spikes a little and heart rate speeds up a little is this normal when starting on this medicine?

Do you actually test blood pressure to know what it is doing ?
While many of us know the feel of our body, tests are only way to know.

Next a week is not really very long, and it needs to be taken longer. But your doctor needs to discuss side effects with you

"Feeling" your bp is high and actually testing are two different things. Get a cuff and use it.

I have very high, controlled bp. I take mine twice a day, every day. I cannot rely on my feeling that it is high/low/in between.

I have been taking metoprolol 50 mg for 10 days now I went to er 10 days ago with fast heart rate they prescribed beta blocker to slow heart rate to keep svt from happening I have been monitoring my heart rate for 10 days and I have kept 60-80 for last ten days since being home I do not have high blood pressure. But this medicine makes me feel depressed and out of it I do not like the tiredness and almost zombie state I sometimes find myself in. so my question is can I stop taking this medicine I do not have a family dr I am trying to get one through health dept but they are same day scheduling so I have to call them everyday to be seen in hopes that they will I do not have insurance and I do not want to become dependent on these medicines as I cannot get another prescription if I run out the er only gave me 2 months worth but I feel terrible I have asked other people who have been on this medicine if they have experienced the side effects I have and they say no so can I quit taking it or do I need to ween off it? And how should I

From Drugs.com: "Do not suddenly stop taking Lopressor. Sharp chest pain, irregular heartbeat, and sometimes heart attack may occur if you suddenly stop Lopressor. The risk may be greater if you have certain types of heart disease. Your doctor should slowly lower your dose over several weeks if you need to stop taking it. This should be done even if you only take Lopressor for high blood pressure. Heart disease is common and you may not know you have it. Limit physical activity while you are lowering your dose. If new or worsened chest pain or other heart problems occur, contact your doctor right away. You may need to start taking Lopressor again."

Do NOT just stop taking this drug.
