Have a Briggs and stratton 14.5hp, starts fine but starts to spit and sputter and puffs smoke out of front by exhaust.

A few very different possibilities are gas in the crankcase mixed with the oil, armature problem and blown head gasket. Some very different things, I admit but any one of them could easily cause your described problem.
