View Full Version : Moen balancing spool removal problem

I'm attempting to replace the balancing spool in my Moentrol. Luckily, the threads weren't seized up, and it was fairly easy to back out the screw. However, I got to the point where the screw is just spinning (the threads don't seem to be engaged), but the spool won't come out. I haven't used a lot of force to pull on it yet, for fear of damaging something. Is there something else I need to do to get the spool out? Or is it time to get medieval on it?

Thanks!

Steve

Hi Steve

Did you remove the copper horseshoe shaped clip that holds the cartridge in place?

If not, check out this video... should help here:

Good luck!

I'm trying to replace the balancing spool, not the cartridge.

They usually come out with moderate pulling force.

If the o rings are mangled, might take more pulling force.

You could try using water pressure to push it out.

Place folded towel in front of loosened balancing spool to catch it.

Gradually open the hot and cold stops to see if water pressure pushes it out.

Be ready to quickly close the stop screws to stop the gushing water.

Moen has lifetime warranty to original purchaser.

Call 800 buy moen to order replacement parts and ask advice.
