Hi ! I am wondering if getting your cartilage pierced with a needle will hurt, because truly I am very scared. I have seen so many pictures of icky, yucky, red, swollen infected cartilage piercings on Google and that's what's really scaring me ! I know I'll be fine if I just take care of it ( like clean it daily, and don't touch it that much etc.) but I am still very scared . Oh, also I am 12 years old, but I'm going to be 13 on June 21st if that helps with anything . So if you guys can please tell me how much it hurts on a scale from 1-10 , good tips on taking care of it , and pros and cons. Thanks guys! (:

First, mom and dad have to okay this.

Second, we can't tell you how much it hurts, my pain tolerance is different than yours. I had two kids naturally, not a lot of pain, so I'd probably say that a cartilage piercing is a 1. But, I have friends that had an epidural as soon as labor started, because they couldn't take the pain. They'd probably say that a cartilage piercing is a 10 on the scale. It depends on the person.

When you get it pierced, the piercer (if he/she is a professional) will tell you how to care for you piercing correctly. If the piercer tries to do a cartilage piercing with a gun, not a needle, run out of there. A cartilage piercing should only be done with a needle, a gun could shatter the cartilage.

Good luck.

Read some of the sad stories/threads on this site about women/girls getting their cartilage pierced -- the pain and infections that resulted -- and you might change your mind. You know, you don't have to do this just because "everyone else" does.

I have two cartilage piercings and neither hurt but it will swell right after you get it done. Just don't mess with it and keep it really clean. If it bleeds after a few months, keep the post in longer
