My 23 year old is getting quite frail and keeps falling over onto her side when she loses her balance. Of course, she is struggling to get up as she hasn't the strength in her hind legs.
She sees the vet every 3 months as she is on a daily pill for over active thyroid gland. On the last visit I mentioned this problem and the vet said it was loss of muscle tissue as opposed to arthritis. She eats and drinks well and doesn't appear to be in any pain.
She can still just about jump onto the sofa but she is not getting any stronger and we don't like to leave Sophie for too long.
Has anyone else had experience with this problem?
Linda.

Yes, just about every cat that old loses muscle, just like people do.
Build her two steps out of boxes to get on the couch. Make sure they are taped together and don't slip on the floor. You can buy 'pet steps' too.
I have various things for my older small dog to climb on to get on the bed, couch, and one chair she likes. Her legs are only 4" long and I will make the steps even smaller as she ages. Cats tend to be a bit more nimble but not always.
