I'm an international student in the US started from 2010. I didn't have any income until 2012 and my school official didn't tell anything about tax filing so I didn't file for 2010 and 2011. I transferred to another school and worked a little in 2012 and had income like only 1000 dollars. I don't owe any taxes and I have tax withheld for like $48.

I feel weird that I didn't receive my check after 2 months I filed my tax. So I went to IRS website where they have a tool that track the status of the returns (though I didn't receive any formal letter from IRS). My new school official did tell me that all international student must file at least one form if I physically presented in the US, which I did of course.

I'm not like trying to avoid tax or anything because the income was low and I don't owe anything. Maybe I file it right or it lost in mail. Should I be concerned? What should I do?

What does "the IRS claimed ..." mean? You got a letter or some other notification that you neglected to file tax returns?

If so, you respond to the letter, give your reason(s) for not filing.

You "ruined" your first tax filing? I thought you didn't file. Not filing is a crime - what does the letter say?

Sorry if I say something confusing. I didn't receive anything formally from IRS.

I entered my information and they said they don't have my tax return on file.

The tax return probably has NOT been entered into the system yet, as there is a backlog for returns like Form 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ that must be mailed rather than filed electronically.

Thanks for your respond and I'll recheck the system every now and then. But what if I just did something stupid and didn't file correctly so that the IRS just didn't get it(it's my first time ever doing tax)? Is there a way to save it like late filing?

If you retained a file copy, it can always be re-submitted.
