I rent a lttle cottage in the country that sits in the middle of woods w/ a stream and surrounding cornfeilds. The landlord told me I have well water but that's all she told me. I've never had a place with well water before. So I noticed sediment in the toilet bowl and "googled" it. After reading many posts I found that many of them refer to having filters. How do I check that I have the proper ones, do I need to change them? What kind of maintenance is required? Etc. Landlord is unreachable and doesn't want to be bothered with thes "petty" questions. Can you please advise? Is it safe to drink? As a renter what can I do?

Landlord is unreachable and doesn't want to be bothered with thes "petty" questions. This is anything but petty. Sounds like the water table has fallen and now you're pulling diet (dirt)? Into your system. BY LAW you landlord has to provide potable drinking water and dirt in your water doesn't get it. If there's a filter you'll find it where the water enters the house, In the meantime contact the landlord. If she drags her feet then contact the County Heath Department. This is a unsanitary situation and a health hazard that should be looked after ASOP, Good luck, Tom
