We had two twin fluorescent lights with diffuser fitted and two single tubes fitted without diffusers. They have all been fitted by a qualified electrician. However, all of them are buzzing and giving off fumes (like paint or glue) to such an extent we have had to turn them off and open windows and doors. They were bought from B & Q. The electrician took them down and replaced them. The problem was exactly the same. Fumes and buzzing. The electrician is obviously working for nothing now, travelling here to take them down, back to B & Q, then back here to re-fit them. We have been to B & Q today and they say just to return them for a refund.

Has anyone any ideas please as regards what might be the problem. We have other fluorescent lights in the house which aren't a problem, and the lights they replaced weren't a problem either.

I have seen this issue when a T12 tube was used in a T8 spaced fixture. The T12 is fatter and does not always allow complete contact and the tube pin arcs. Make sure the tubes fit properly and are tightly seated in the holder. If it arcs too much, it will burn the holder slots.

Also, you could have one or all ballasts failing. Sometimes these transformers will "Boil out".

If you know how to remove the center panel, then remove it and check for any residue (dark black and bubbly texture) along each ballast. If you find it, replace the ballast.
