I am the sole owner of a 1997 Infiniti I30. Recently the tape deck began malfunctioning. Each time I start the car, the deck tries repeatedly (and loudly) to eject a tape - whether a tape is in the unit or not. This goes on for probably 3 seconds. The deck has hardly ever been used - certainly not at all for the last several years. Rather than repair the deck, I would like to disconnect it. The local dealer says that many wires lead into and from the combined radio, CD, and tape deck system, and it would take hours studying schematics to know which wire(s) to disconnect. Does this make sense? Any ideas other than this expensive option?

Correction to question. The deck tries to eject a tape for probably 30 seconds (not 3) each time the car is started.

A good technician should be able to disable the cassette without effecting anything else. Find an installer that also does repairs. It CAN be done without several hours of schematic searching. The person that told you that just didn't want to do it, or does not know how to.

I did repairs on car stereos for over 25 years.
