I have a 15 year old rottweiler. She has suddenly stopped eating & drinking. She tried to vomit at the onset but couldn't. She is constipated, is weak, drools some but not excessively. What's wrong?

Time to take the poor thing to the vet...
IF you had this wrong with you, you would go to the doctor.

We're going in a few minutes, I just like to be forewarned. I want to know as much about my enemy as I can before I wade into the battle. Thanks.

Unfortunately your enemy is old age and senior disorders, much like my clients!
Just don't make that lovely old pet of yours do any more then he/she has to do.
I wish you luck at the vet.

Unproductive vomiting could mean bloat or blockage... prepare yourself for some blood work and x-rays

We took our Rottie to the vet. He couldn't find anything obviously wrong except that her kidneys were starting to malfunction due to lack of fluids so he is keeping her over night to give IV fluids and try to get her systems back on track. He is as confused as we are. There are no obvious blockages or major malfunctions and the blood work was normal. Now we wait and see. She is in great hands. She is one of his favorite patients as she is the longest living rottie he has ever treated and in the best health for her age and a wonderful temperament. She has minor cataracts and up till now only mild arthritis. We are praying for a good outcome. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Spoke to the Vet today about our Rottie. She is re-hydrated and her systems are back on track and doing well. She is eating and urinating, up and walking. Still isn't drinking but she's had several bags of IV fluids so I doubt she feels thirsty. She was running a mid-grade fever so the vet's giving her a shot of antibiotics and another bag of fluids but he still can't find anything specific wrong. He is sending her home this afternoon. Hopefully, she will get past this on her own with just a little medical support. Maybe it was just some unknown infection after all she is unusually old for her breed. Rotties rarely live beyond 9 or 10 years so we consider ourselves blessed that we still have her and she is in good health. I'm not the kind of person to selfishly keep a pet alive that is suffering greatly or has no quality of life. As long as she is happy and not suffering badly, I will do all I can to make sure she gets the best I can give her. She been a fantastic addition to our family for many great years. Thanks for all the concern.

So glad to hear she's doing better, and I hope she has a speedy recovery, and many many more years with her family.
Please keep us posted, and we'd love pictures. There's a sticky (permanent thread) in the dog forum on how to post pictures. If you can't find it, I can link it for you. We'd love to see your family member. No pressure though. :)

I'll get a pic on soon. She's home, doing okay. She's eating a little, drinking and alert. Slow to get moving but that's expected. Vet never could figure out exactly what was wrong but said with a little TLC she should be fine. He gave her a different pain med for her arthritis and a mild antibiotic as a precaution. Hopefully, she will bounce back soon. My husband was a basket case till she came home and he is babying her something awful, bless him. She's his other Baby. Thanks for the concern.

We found out our Baby has a large mass in her chest that is taking up almost all of her lung space. On the x-rays, the mass covers her heart and lungs. You cannot see her heart at all and you can only see a very small amount of lung space left. She only has a short time left. So I told the vet to get her a steroid shot to ease her breathing & brought her home. She's doing very well considering all. We are enjoying what time we have.

I feel so badly for you. Love her to pieces while you have her, is all you can do now. She knows you care.

I'm so sorry to hear this. Enjoy every moment with her, and know that she will understand if you have to make the decision to spare her pain and suffering. Sadly that's part of having a pet, the very worst part.
We're all here for you if need to bend an ear, or need a shoulder to cry on. We've all been her before, so we really do understand.
(((hugs)))

Thanks for all your concern and support. It's tough knowing we are going to loose her soon but for now we are just concentrating on enjoying our time with her. She's doing amazingly well. She's up and moving around, getting out and walking around outside. Granted, she doesn't go far or stay out long. She just wants to stay close to her people but her breathing seems to have settled down some since I had the vet give her the steroid shot. She seems happy and content. As long as she's not suffering, I happy to let things run their natural course. I will not let her suffer! She deserves better than that. She could show a lot of humans what dignity really is. Thanks for all. I will get some pics on here.

My golden was like your dog. He hung his head, wouldn't eat... large tumors in his lungs... vet gave me prednisone pills for him, which perked him up and enabled him to go on his last forbidden jaunt down the road to check out all the neighbors. The vet said bring him back anytime to be put down (I decided against having anyone come to the house) and I did so after 3 days. The vet also said give him anything he wants, so he got straight hamburger. I got no sleep so pretty much had to bring him back then.

Update. Took our rottie to her regular vet. He re-xrayed her chest. No mass or cancer. He doesn't know what the other vet did to his x-rays but she is completely fine. She is our regular vets' favorite patient. He's never had a rottie that has lived as long as she has and is in as good shape as her. She is up and moving around and acting like a pup at times. So happy for her, thanks all.
