So, I applied for this job (full-time) and sent the application directly to the director (he and I worked together on a commission last year). He replied and said, "Jake-thanks for your application. It's always good to hear from you." He also copied HR on his email reply to.

On Wednesday, he sent me an email asking if I were a full-time graduate student. I replied and told him that I'm a part-time graduate student through the school's online program.

Do you think he is just being polite or that I'm a serious candidate. I have not been interviewed thus far. Thanks!

`Jake

Impossible to know for sure based on what has been presented.

It is not possible to know, if you know him, call him on phone and talk to him.
Next when you talked, and you said part time in school, were you clear that you could work any hours they needed?

I'm guessing he's serious.
Wheels often turn slowly for hiring. They wait for a stack of applications. They wait for someone to do triage on them. They wait for a meeting to go over them in a group. Who knows?
Part time online is perfect - it means you want to learn more, but it also means you don't have to be somewhere at a set time.
Stay positive! Eagerness and positive attitude are two of the most important parts to get a job.

I would say you are being considered, otherwise they would not have asked for further info. How seriously you are being considered is impossible to tell.
