Hello folks,

I have a wiring problem that has me stumped. I have a Leviton Model 6526 combo nightlight/wall switch. I only have a black and white wire coming from the box. It says it requires Black hot, black load and a neutral. I tried using a wire to cross-connect the 2 black poles to my wall's black wire but only the nightlight turns on and off. I would appreciate any help I can get with solving this lighting question.

Thanks,

JohnM

You do not have a neutral at this switch box and therefore you cannot use this switch which requires a neutral.
The white in your box is a hot, not a neutral.

With the advent of the 2011 edition of the NEC, it is required to provide a Neutral at the switch box, for the use of specialty switches.

Now you need to pull a 14/3 conductor with ground to the switch. Black will connect the power supply black to the input of the switch. Red will return from the switch and connect to the hot on the light. White will connect to the neutral required by the switch and the neutrals in the ceiling..
