Hello,

Had a couple of questions with regards to installing a drain for a pre-molded fiberglass shower base. A few photos below are of
1. The brass drain and 2. Drain in the base.

First question is with regards to the black rubber ring that goes between the drain and the fiberglass base, you can see the edge of the black ring in the second photo. Should I used the black rubber ring, or use plumbers putty to seal drain to the base (or both)? (Seen YouTube video where he used plumbers putty and not the ring: shower base install and connect drain install - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHRwNZnli6E)).

Question two, how far up the brass ring should the pvc go on the inside of the drain. I know the pvc goes into the brass drain, and then you place the black beveled rubber piece between the drain and pvc, and then it gets clamped down with the threaded hold down on the inside, but is there a certain distance the pvc should come up inside the brass drain? again you can see a shot of the pvc in the drain in that same you tube video.

Thanks in advance,
Steve

Plumber putty goes between the drain flange and the shower base. The rubber gasket goes between the underside of the shower base and the nut that secures the drain to the shower base. He doesn't show installing the gasket and nut in the video.

The pipe should extend up into the drain further than the thickness of the compression gasket but not so far as to prevent tightening the compression ring with the little tool provided. Let's say the pipe should extend up into the drain about 1/2" below the top of the internal threads of the drain.

Before attempting to tighten the compression ring, tie a string between your wrist and the little tool. If you don't, it is for sure that you will drop it down the drain. Don't ask me how I know that.

I have seen two different YouTube videos for this type of drain, and both of them say put a sock or something in the drain, otherwise you will most likely lose the tool, and I can definitely see how that will happen, but good idea with regards to the string too.

Thanks,
