So I am a 34 yr old female, have been on the birth control pill for about 5 years, and have always had 4-5 day long periods, like clockwork. Right now, I am on day 11 of my period. It seemed normal, until the 5th day when it started getting very heavy and full of clots, some the size of a dime, but most the size of an egg and many the size of my palm. Soaking through a tampon per hour for the last 4 days, it has slowed to about every 2-2 1/2 hours today. I assume that I should go to the hospital, but is there any way at all this might just be a good spring cleaning? I can't believe the amount of blood I'm losing.

Spring cleaning - glad you have a sense of humor. This is a situation calling for a GYN before the ER, if you can convince the office to see you right away. Otherwise yes, go to the ER, mid-day if possible.
There is a regular responder here who went through this and had to have emergency surgery, I believe. Hopefully she will see this.
Two of the common conditions are PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) and endometriosis.
There is another woman here who has several relatives with a rare condition called Ideopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura. Hopefully she will see this too.
