View Full Version : Can I fix a leaky shower stall drain?

Hi all - I have discovered a leak in my pre-fab basement shower stall. It appears that the gasket or seal between the outer drain pipe which comes down from the shower and encircles the actual 2" ABS drain pipe is not functioning (it actually looks and feels like a soggy, slimy, mess of something not runner). I know for a fact water is leaking between these two pipes.

Can I fix this with a simple gasket replacement? Is there some rubber product I can buy? If so should I also caulk it? Last question - I know water has gotten into the shower base - can I leave it once the drain is fixed or do I need to rip up everything and dry it out to prevent mould on the concrete?

Thanks for any and all help!

Hi Lozza

If you can determine the manufacturer of the pre-fab. Pan then contact them and ask for a new drain gasket... easy enough to replace.

If you can't determine the manufacturer then pop by a local plumbing supply store and ask them for a shower drain seal... should carry a universal seal that will work for you.

To remove the old seal, put a few screws into the rubber seal and pull up on the screws in an alternating manner and it should pop up and out pretty easily.

To install the new seal, clean everything up real well and then use a little dish soap to lubricate the seal and the pipe and slide the new seal into place. Tamp down using a blunt tool and hammer (be careful not to drop hammer or tamp down to much).
