My husband is 48 and for a week has had a pain in his lower back, right side, it is more painful if he is sat, but eases when he moves around, he had his appendix out as a child so it isn't that, we are hoping to get him into the docs this week, the more I read the more I think it might be kidney related, does this sound familiar to anybody, it is getting gradually worse

I recently had pain in my back right side. Doctor #1 thought it might be kidney related. That was ruled out after lab tests came back. Doctor #2 switched my antibiotics, but pain never stopped. Doctor #3 ordered ultrasound which showed nothing, but performed internal exam and located problem. My advice: we can't possibly know if it is a muscular, kidney, or other problem. Doctor #3 said pain radiates and mine wasn't anywhere near where the actual problem was.

This could be a kidney stone or possibly even an infection. It's hard to say for sure though, being on the internet and all.

If the pain becomes too unbearable, his urine becomes bloody, or if he gets a fever I'd recommend taking him to the ER quickly. Otherwise your GP should be able to help you out.

In the main time have him drink lots of fluids (nothing sugary, alcoholic, or any tea/coffee/soda -water would be best!), apply heat to the area (this will also help if it's just a muscle issue), ibuprofen can be used to help with the inflammation (but only if you're certain it's not something more insidious!)

Good luck, and I hope he feels better.
