Hi, I have a PC running XP Pro and I am using a Network Everywhere Cable/DSL 4 port router (NR041). It is configured and I have only one problem. I use a bittorrent client, which to make a long story short, allows me to download and upload files (music, movies, etc.) If my router is not configured properly I show up as "firewalled" and cannot achieve the high up/down speeds that this program allows. I have spoken to tech support and they only get me half the way there. It all depends on how you configure the TCP or UDP settings. Help, please, anyone? Thanks.

In the router web interface, look for a button that says something like "Port forwarding" or "DNAT" or "Servers" or even (in the WRT54G's case) "Applications & Gaming"

This will bring you to a page where you can specify what ports to forward and to where. You want to forward ports 6881 to 6889, TCP protocol, to the machine running the torrent client.

You will need to IP address of that machine. To get it, on XP pro, do this:

Click Start-->Run
Type "cmd" in the box and press enter
Enter "ipconfig" in the command shell window, and press enter.

This will get you the machine's IP address (It will start with 192.168 or 10. Or 172.[16-32] ).

Note your router may be dynamically assigning the IP addresses to the machines behind it. You will probably want to give your desktop a static IP, to ensure its IP does not change, thus screwing up your configuration.

I have that router and have it setup for emule. Go to the Port Range Forwarding section in setup. Give your PC a fixed address so the router won't assign a different one or otherwise the forwarding you set up won't work when the router dhcp changes your PC address. Name the application... put in the ports you want forwarded... check the Protocol UTP and TCP boxes... put in whatever fixed address you gave your PC.. and click the enable box and you should be OK. And don't type runon sentences with lots of... in them hehe.

Psi42 is right, you need to set up port forwarding for the p2p app to work.
