View Full Version : What is wrong with my riding mower

I have a 1958 craftsmen lawn tractor that worked fine yesterday but today I was mowing someone's lawn and the engine started smoking so I turned it off and checked it out 10 minutes later I tried agein and it still smoked so I turned it off but the next time that I tried it made a high pitch sound and wouldent start now it is leaking fluid and the blade deck belt is very loose but stuck behind a bolt please what do I do I'm so scared my nabor will find out he has had this mower in his family for 60 years and I have it for 2 days and screw it up

Also the headlight broke off the metal bar that was holding it on. It really is falling apart right when I get it

Hi,
You will definitely need to provide more detailed info here. You have gone back to before the "old" category all the way to the "vintage" category. There are websites dedicated to these types of machines. You can search yourself keeping in mind the word vintage. You could start here:

One thing it lists first is identification. Doubt seriously much of this is your fault. I would say you are getting air into the sump causing the smoke. Headlight bar is just a welding job.
