The person is arrested and charged with a crime. After a hearing the person can be jailed and when the sentence is served, deported and ordered out of Canada forever.

The person can then be held by US officials.

How do I know? I'm ex-homeland security.

Or the person can simply leave Canada and go back to the US before the illegal entry is discovered.

Without knowing the crime, shop lifting is a lot different than murder.

A few more details would be nice to give any level of educated answer

You cannot enter US on visa waiver program, you must apply for visitor's visa at the consulate.
