You can give up your rights, BUT you'll still have to pay support!

Yes the laws allow people who do not want to be responsible and help care for their children to sign over their legal rights to have anything to do with the child ( custody, visitaition, right to make choices)
But you can not get out of your legal obligation to support the child, so you will have to continue to pay child suport even after you give up your rights ( with the exception if the child is adopted)

Are you all sure she would have to pay child support, etc. I mean what if she is giving up her rights because she is UNABLE to support this child in the first place?
I do know that if it's a newborn, if you take it to a hospital, or other designated areas, and drop it off, there are no questions and no prosecution. There certainly wouldn't be any support in a case like this. I am glad they passed this law, I am sure it will save a lot of babies! I pray most new moms are aware of it and take advantage of it too.

because she is UNABLE to support this child in the first place?Hello Mam:
This is America. We're not a 3rd world country. Work is available here. McDonalds needs workers. Aluminum cans are worth money and they're laying all over the place. She can support her children. Of that, I have no doubt.

Did you try browsing this forum before posting. Had you done so, you would have found dozens of posts all asking the same thing. And all getting the same answer that relinquishing parental rights does not take away financial responsibility.

You make a valid point here. Usually this question is asked by the non custodial parent who is trying to get out of paying child support.
In the situation you refer to there is no FORMAL relinquishing of rights. The situation you refer to is child abandonment, not reliniquishing rights. I agree the laws allowing abandonment under certain circumstances are good ones.
There is one other situation where reliniquishing rights removes responsibility. That is in the case of adoption. In fact, the vast majority of cases where there is a formal relinquishing of parental rights occurs to pave the way for adoption.
But I don't think that deals with the question the OP was really asking.

Once you give up your rights, which is a hard thing to do unless someone is stepping in to adopt the child, you are no longer responsible for it in any way - including financially. I don't know where some people on here get their info, but I have seen a lot of answers lately that are just plain WRONG!
