Her current guardian is willing to do this. We don't know the first steps to take. I'm married, active duty military, and my sister lives in Virginia, and I'm about to relocate to California for the next 3yrs. What is the first thing we should dip? School ends in Virginia mid June. And we'd like to get her after school ends so that she can adjust in California, and so that we can prepare her for high school in California. Any, and all advice welcomed please.

Contact an attorney in Virginia, tomorrow.

When you say current guardian. Who are we talking about other then your / her parents? They may also need to be involved if this is going to be an adoption.

Certainly, there are many things that will have to be done. But OP most certainly shouldn't try this on OP's own. That's why it's so important to seek competent legal counsel first.

Agreed. But it doesn't change the facts. We don't know why there is a guardian but there also stands the possibility that the parents of the child may be involved. It would be good to know before walking in for council as they are better prepared to ask questions rather then being blindsided.
