My daughter Ayla is 9. And has such a huge heart.
When she heard about the 30 hour famine she wanted to do it SO MUCH!! (30 hour fasting to raise money for famine)

I want to see if I can get some advice and opinions about this from you AMHD experts. I trust you more than my group of friends on Facebook lol.

Can Ayla do this with me? She is 9. But I have seen people say that children under 12 shouldn't fast.

Is there any way to modify it for her so that she feels she is still doing something? She wants to do this so much. I would hate to tell her she can't (I will if I need to)

Speaking as a semi-health care provider, no she probably should not fast, at least for not that long.

The health implications are too risky and she's at an age where nutrition is essential, even if it is just this once.

If she does want to fast though, maybe you could do a shorter period and call it a fast- perhaps a 6 or 7 hour fast, this way she still eats during the day but gets to be involved. With that you could even do two "fasts" in one day.
She could also help raise money in some other way: maybe jumping rope or shooting hoops every hoop or jump could be worth 5 cents or something.

I hope she finds some way to get involved and I wish the both of you luck!

I would recommend placing a call to her pediatrician. This gives you an educated answer and if the answer is no, you can tell your daughter her doctor helped you make the decision. It is lovely that she wants to do this. Maybe she can raise money for the cause selling cupcakes or something she made.

Thank you both. Gernald, that is a great idea. Thank you for suggesting that! I should have thought of that myself. She can have a great breakfast, and fast during the day, perhaps skipping lunch and snacks, and then finish the day with supper.

Jenn, that is a great idea as well! In fact, that gives me an idea, I could talk to the youth pastor (its actually the teens doing this but Ayla wanted to do it too) and see if she could be in charge of bringing them water and juice.
Or we can bring an 'after fast friendly' meal to the youth group after their fast.
