The perimeter of a football field is 1,040 feet. The length of the field is 120 feet less than three times the width. What are the dimensions of the football field?

Well, you have 4 sides to the field, 2 are one length and 2 are a separate length. Next, create your equation based on knowing that one side is 120 feet is smaller than 3 times the width. Use a variable, say "w" and create your equation. You can create a setup for the length and the width and then times it by 2.

length = 3w - 120
width = w

2 * (3w - 120 + w) = 1040
