I have a step-daughter that has lived in France with her mother for the past 16 years. She was born in the United States and has been living in Lyon with her mother, who is a French citizen. She worked last year in France for the first time but her job was over after mid-summer.
She is very proud of being American and will not give that up but recently she was stopped by the Police while outside of her apartment and she was told she must prove she can be in France or she will be deported. As much as I would love to have her back here it is her life and she has her mother and family there and although she plans one day to return and live in the United States, she lives in France. She lives with her mother.
She does not have a green card. She has no French identification. She has an original copy of her birth certificate, her parents birth certificate copies and proof she worked in France last year but she has not yet paid those taxes, as she has been searching unsuccessfully for work so I don't know how she will prove she has paid taxes in France when she hasn't. Would she have to pay her taxes first?
Her mother has her listed on the apartment and has lived in the same apartment for probably ten years. Also she has lived in France and attended school and has "adapted" to French life. Lastly, she has never been in trouble or broken the law. I believe this is most of the criteria required to request citizenship in France besides completing the necessary paperwork.
In addition to my question regarding whether she needs to pay taxes before she applies for French citizenship...
Would she need a green card?
Is this a lengthy process?
If they deport her does she have warning to pack and how do they deport them? On a plane and to where?
I don't know if anyone knows any answers to these questions but it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
