Hi,

My daughter is 6 months old and seems that she has only recently started recognizing people. However, to my utter disappointment, she seems to be more close to my mother in law than me. Both of us have been around her and took care of her since she was born. She smiles at my mother in law whenever she sees her and tries to be held by her when she is around. She chooses her over me. This makes me feel very sad and depressed. Also, it occurs to me that perhaps I am not taking good care of her as a mother should. Please guide if this is only a temporary phase or whether I should improve the way I take care of her.

Thanks.

Of course it is temporary, she is only 6 months old, why would you take umbrage at this? When she develops more, there will be no doubt at all who she loves the best. She has already bonded with you, not your MIL.

Grandmothers often have very expressive faces (since they have dealt with many babies over their lifetime) and know all the right baby noises to make. Your daughter seems to respond to her more simply because Grandma is more expressive and "silly." Watch her face when she talks to your baby and do similar things, plus sing to her and talk to her a lot.

Like tickle said, she is yours and always will be. And she knows you are Mom.
