Hi AtlantaTaxExpert,
I had to file 1040NR to get FICA refund. Since I receive the refund, I am planning to amend it as a joint return with my spouse, who is a resident alien for tax purpose. Should I leave the numbered lines on 1040X and just attach the corrected 1040 (based on instructions on i1040x, page 4)?

Also while filing separately, we received refunds from IRS. Where do I include this detail on the amended return? (Please note that we paid taxes while filing for extension)

Thanks

I always complete the Form 1040X, AND attach the Form 1040 to ensure clarity.

You report the refund you received for the Form 1040NR on the Form 1040X. The difference is your refund as a result of changing from Married Filing Separately to joint.

Thanks ATE. Should I mail the 1040x to the 1040NR address listed on i1040X (page 4) or the address next to my state on page 5 of i1040x?
