For almost a year my dog, aged 4, has been suffering these bouts of pain and I've had no help from the vet tonight it happened again and I am fed up of watching her suffer! She's 100% healthy always has been but after hard exercise short or long periods of ball chasing or a full day out shooting she cramps up in the evenings about 5 or so hours after she starts shivering whines can't lie on her side in her basket walks around all huntched up walks sideways tall floppy etc and really yelps if u touch her she's clearly in a lot of pain the vet have seen her like this and recommended X-rays I said no cost I couldn't afford it (I think this is the next step I will take now) she's had blood and urine samples showing no abnormalities, I work with horses and thought it was just like 'tying up' but the vet poo pooed this and said proteins in the urine sample were slightly raised but nothing to b concerned about I don't know what to do I feel like the vet is not that bothered but I am reluctant to change as they've been so good up to this point can anybody help??

Truthfully if the vet is making recommendations and your not following them then its hard to help you. Have you tried changing the dogs diet or given supplements?

She could be having back pain. Small dogs are prone to getting disc disease and with vigorous activity, can cause these flare ups to happen.
I would be searching for a second opinion from another vet.

Seeking another Vet's opinion would be my next thing to do. I have a Lab who suffers from arthritus, on medication, and went through alergy testing. She is allergic to basically 6 foods, and other things. It costs, I know. Good luck, and best wishes.

I don't want to second guess your vet, but those symptoms sound a lot like constipation. Have you discussed the dog's bowel movements with your Doc?

Thanks for the help I will seek a second opinion. The vet only recommended X-rays when she first saw the dog because she said she might have broken something (that shows how much pain she appears to be in) but she also said she didn't have a clue what else it could be, I am 100% sure it's not a break as the next morning she is always back to her normal self this makes me think its muscles I changed her onto a very low maintenance food over a year ago as she was on the working mix we gave our collie which of course was ridiculous for a JR. Her bowls movements are fine the pain mostly seems to be around the top of her neck and down her back leg muscles
