I have an older ceiling fan that has been working correctly until the pull chain broke off at the switch. The electrician replaced the switch with 3 speed/3 wire switch and he said there was an extra wire. He didn't know what it was for. When the fan was turned on after he left, there was a burning smell coming from the motor. Turned the fan off and didn't use it until the electrician came back (another electrician came). He said it should have been a 3 speed/4 wire and he hadn't seen the 4 wire switch in years. I found one a Lowe's, called him and it was installed. He said that there was some plastic part that looked like it had melted. He couldn't find the name of the fan. He left and said he would research the problem and hasn't come back. I hesitant to use the fan. It might be a Pacific Breeze 305 or a Concord 52" brand. Is there a drawing of a fan motor that would show a plastic part?

With all the cost of electricians and parts you could have bought a new fan. That's the problem with older fans, parts are not 100% interchange. Nice new fans are <$100
