I am charged with theft under $5000 in Montreal, Quebec.
The value of the items is around $230.
I am 30 and work full time.
This is my first offense.
I am not sure if I should hire a lawyer or not? I really don't want a criminal record because of my career.
I have read a lot about this situation in the rest of Canada but nothing specific to Montreal. Is there a similar program for diversion in Quebec?
Should I have a lawyer send the prosecuter a letter prior to initial court date to help plead my case? Or should I just wait and see what happens on my appearance date?
What kind of defenses to people normally use in these situations?
What is better diversion or discharge?
So confused!
I've been told to plead non-guilty even though I'm sure they have strong evidence against me.
Please help!
thanks
