I have the above printer which has started giving trouble & only the printing and copying works but the scanning doe not work. Re-installing software also is troublesome and a red cross appears during USB connect prompt and the troubleshooting indicates that the "control panel overlay" is not attached firmly. I saw that this "overlay" is missing from my printer and I do not remember having it because I was away from home for a year and after setting up the computer I started having these printer problems. I cannot find/buy it anywhere here in Bombay and no one seems to know about it even! I would like to know the significance of this "overlay" and how important it is. Many thanks

There is a sticker which you have to stick onto the control panel. This Sticker has a barcode graph on the bottom side (that with clue) there is a small groove at the place where the sticker's barcode is, so that at turn on - the scanner reads the barcode and initalizes the PSC1315 device. If that sticker is missing or with damaged barcode some unexpected things may appear. In my package there were 3 stickers in different languages. You may try putting another sticker.

Here you can see what the sticker looks like, I've 2 more stickers - in Greek, and in Turkish. Here is in Greek:
The front look ot the sticker

The back look of the sticker

As you can see when you turn back the sticker there is a barcode at the left edge. Try making the same (print it). Make sure the following way : leave like this from bottom to top (read the barcode) - leave the thin strip, leave the thick strip, the following strips may be 2,3 or more, and at different places. They define the language of the user. This image is for Greek. I don't know what will be exactly for your language.
I hope I helped you, there is nothing more I can do ;)

Many thanks once again you have really helped me understand this sticker business. The pictures are a bit hazy but never mind my language is english and I am trying to get hold of another sticker from around here keeping fingers crossed. I am sure it's the barcode problem because my printer works and also copying works but scanning doesn't. Thanks a lot Regards - Khushroo Dholoo

I just received a reply from HP India office and they sent me a patch for for IE7 which I am using at present. With the patch everything works fine and I can scan as before even without the overlay! I am really surprised. Anyway thanks - Khushroo
