City of Conway, Arkansas recently upgraded the main sewer line and placed a
Vent for the line, just behind our back fence. We immediately started smelling a bad odor in our back yard. I have check on the internet and found that the rotten egg odor is probably Hydrogen Sulfide. I called the city and they sent me to the company responsible for the sewer line. The sewer company is telling me that to correct the problem would cost a large amount of money. He told me that the area behind my fence is the highest point on the line and that is why they put the vent where it is (behind my back fence).

What should I do??

Have you contacted any of you political representatives? What is the function of the company you have referred to? Is this the contractor who installed the sewer lines or a company that manages the sewer system for the city? Have your neighbors complained also?

This is way above my pay grade but that does not sound logical to me. The highest point of a sewer would be its beginning or immediately after a lift station. If a vent is necessary it certainly would be a one way vent. One that would let air in but would not let air or odors out.

I think you should go back to city hall.
