I am trying to figure out how to charge sales taxes on an e-commerce site. I will be based in NY and be selling mainly gift items. I was told that I need to charge all orders being shipped to a NY address NY sales taxes based on the NYS County jurisdiction list Publication 718 (and not by zipcode). The problem is that there are about 83 counties/localities and I don't know how to make my website charge according to these counties. I can only set up my program to calculate by state or zipcode.

I was just wondering if there were any tips as to how I would charge sales tax on my e-commerce customers in NY. How do other e-commerce sites do it?

ANSWER

New York has form for filing sales tax returns. Sales made by companies required to collect sales tax in NY via ecommerce report same as non-ecommerce. Collection is made by seller bu charging customer appropriate sales tax rate.
