Not in front of other kids, but pass it to him in a note... or whisper it so only he can hear.

I don't know if this is a good idea or no. But you could - if his name is Tommy - call him Thomas. That might make him feel older. James if Jimmy. Michael if Mikey. You get the idea.

Someone tell all of us if this is a good idea or should I smash my keyboard and go away?

:)

Sunshine isn't a pet name for someone you are involved with, it's sort of generic for anyone who is a pleasure to be around because of a sparkly personality.

Call him Sam. You don't have to do whatever he does! Think of something different.
Give him a flower (even though flowers are generally for girls) and say you grew it yourself by shining on it.

I remember a guy in high school that always called me sweetie. I thought I was special because of that. One day I asked him why, and he said "I call every girl sweetie because I have a really hard time remembering names. It's better than calling them by another girls name".

So, if you really want to get him going, call him Tom. He'll probably say "My name is Sam, not Tom". That will get a conversation going. :)
