Good morning all -

Quick garage circuit question here. I am running a new circuit to a garage (only purpose being for garage door opener, 2 fluorescent lights, and 1 outlet -- as I believe that would be required). Planning on a 20amp circuit, using 12/2 underground feeder.

Because this is only 1 branch circuit, it is my understanding that the NEC would not require me to install a sub panel and extra ground rod at the garage... but would I need a disconnect switch in the garage?

Correct, a ground rod will not be needed for one 120 volt circuit, and one single pole switch at the point of entry into the garage can act as a service disconnect switch.

How far is the garage from your main service panel board?

Also, if you bring electrical power into a remote building, you must put a light an entry light at the entry way to the building (not the garage doors).

FYI - if you are in a fairly cold area you might want to re-think fluorescent lights. They start poorly in cold temps.

Garage is probably about 25' from the house -- any particular reason?

I figured the easiest buying method would be UF in a trench.

The garage does not have an entry way other than the garage doors. Also not my garage, fluorescent lights are already there. Just fixing how the garage is currently wired, which is 12/2 NM cable strung from the top of the house to the garage. Looks great, and very code compliant. (sarcasm)

I was concerned about voltage drop issues. At 25 feet, there is nothing to worry about.

Gotcha - wasn't trying to be snotty, just interested regarding what to consider.
