I am looking for a special movie. It plays in the US end of the 19th century. It starts with the story about a young girl who wants to marry, but cannot because, when the young man asks her father, she has to find out, that she is not legit. This knowledge ends in the suicide of the young girl. The main story is about her friend, who starts her fight against the laws at that time and the society. She and her husband take in children and eventually open up a home. She fights all her life for the rights of those kids because she says "there do not exist eligit children only eligit parents and eventually she succeeds and the laws changed. I cannot remember the title because I saw the movie over 35 years ago. Who can help?
